Do
I have to attend a PAT Testing Course?
Current
legislation states that you have to be 'competent' to carry out PAT
Testing. It
doesn't say that you have to be trained, or hold a PAT Testing Certificate.
You can also carry out testing if you are supervised by a 'competent
person'. Some people do their own PAT testing after watching a
video. Imagine that your son or daughter want to learn to drive. Would
you hand over the keys to your car after just letting them watch a video?
It's when things go wrong
that having training and certification helps. Would a judge accept
watching a video as proof of competency?
Some insurers will also
ask for proof of competency before issuing cover for Public Liability etc.
Do
I need to hold a PAT Testing Certificate?
See the answer
above.
What is the difference between your
Course and the City & Guilds Course?
Our courses
concentrate on the practical aspects of PAT Testing, whereas the City &
Guilds Courses are mainly theory based, covering legislation etc in more
detail. They are probably more suitable for Managers who are
responsible for PAT testing in the organisation.
Is your certificate accepted by Local Authorities, Insurance Companies etc?
Our certificate is
accepted by leading insurers and Local Authorities. In fact we regularly
train staff who work for these types of organisations.
How long is the certificate valid for?
Under current legislation
there is no time limit or recommended recertification period for PAT
Testing. We recommend though, that you attend a refresher course every few
years, to keep up to date with changes in legislation, technology etc.
Do I need to be an electrician to carry out PAT Testing?
Some electrical knowledge
will help, but is not essential. To carry out PAT Testing you only need a
basic understanding of electrical principles; we cover everything that you
need to know during the course.
I want to start my own business as a PAT Tester. Do you cover this?
Our courses are designed to give you the
skills to PAT Test safely and competently. Due to time constraints we cannot
cover general business skills as it would not be fair to the other
candidates. Our trainers are skilled testers and will give general advice on
managing PAT Testing etc.
Can a woman become a PAT tester?
We have
successfully trained many women, who have been seeking a change of career.

Do you show us how to keep records?
One of the course sessions is devoted to record keeping.
Do you show us how to test PC's?
Our courses give you the opportunity to test PC's and monitors, domestic items, other office
equipment, tools etc, including 110v equipment.
Is the written test difficult?
We use the
written (theory) test to check understanding. You need to be able to
understand written legislation as things may change, but we are not out to
test your spelling etc. The questions are multi-choice and you can refer to
your manual if you need to. It's better and safer to look things up, if
you're not sure, when dealing with electricity, than it is to guess.
What
happens if I fail?
In the rare
event that you fail the theory test, or the assessor does not feel that you
are competent, we will offer you a place, free of charge, on the next
course. This may be at the same venue when next due or, if you are willing
to travel, a more immediate course at another venue.
What is the best PAT Tester to buy?
Our trainers
can advise on this on the course. They will have a selection of testers
available for you to try. There is no right answer for everyone; it depends
on the number of items you have to test, whether you plan to expand your
business, do you want to keep paper records or use software to manage
testing.

Do you sell
PAT Testers and equipment?
No. We train with all types and
manufacturers of testers, not just a select few, and thus can offer
impartial advice.

Shall I buy
a PAT Tester before coming on the course?
No. We would
recommend that you wait and
try the testers available, before spending on what may become a white elephant.
